The content of these murals were taken from the stories and conversations of the artists while co-creating this sacred work
The traveling murals are available for communities to display throughout the states and beyond. Appreciation of these murals provide new chances for residents of different economic status, backgrounds, and ethnicities to learn about each other and build meaningful opportunities to create and appreciate art & the healing properties of water together.
The Somos Agua Project started in 2017 to honor the Water Protectors at Standing Rock.
Belinda Garcia, artist and organizer, initiated Somos Agua as an intergenerational silk painting mural to educate communities on the importance of clean water.
Art techniques including drawing, watercolor, silk painting, collaborative design, and creative expression were taught. Participating artists from 4 to 84 years of age join together to learn about water while creating the stories of this sacred work.
Fundamental to the creation of the murals were the aspects of healing mind, body and spirit. Through this education communities can find a safe space to grow into social consciousness.
